Then, when the real experts – the applied linguists and developmental psychologists who have studied these questions for many years – said you can’t expect kids to learn a second language for academic purposes in 180 days, their message was treated as just another opinion, and a controversial one at that. Naturally, the scientists’ responses were more complicated than Unz’s demagoguery. They didn’t claim that nativelanguage instruction was a magic wand capable of solving all problems in the schools.

2 Whether it happened this way or not – the facts are still disputed – the incident involved a minority of parents in a single school out of 8,000 schools in California. Yet massive news coverage of this single event implies a groundswell of Latino opposition to bilingual education. Meanwhile, parent protests against decisions to drop native-language programs, including a recent school boycott in Santa Barbara, have received limited attention from journalists. To be sure, immigrants want their kids to learn English without undue delay, and some appear ready to buy 227 when it’s sold as a way to speed up the process.

Fortunately, neither followed the example of a Texas Congressman on a visit to Mexico, who announced: ‘Estoy embarazada’ (I’m pregnant). Meanwhile, George W. Bush, who led Republicans down the same path in 2000, has continued to abuse the Spanish language and the English language with equal aplomb. Whether they applaud this trend or not, Anglo-Americans are beginning to recognize that the fast-growing Hispanic population has come of age politically. Latinos increased by nearly 60% during the 1990s, overtaking African-Americans as the nation’s largest minority group.
