The first officers of this Society were—R. E. B. Baylor, president; S. P. Andrews, recording secretary, and J. L. Farquhar, treasurer, and the board of managers were Elders H. Garrett, N. T. Byars, Richard Ellis, Z. N. Morrell and Brother Stephen Williams. These pioneering Christians were evidently men of heroic courage and conquering faith. Their achievements border on the miraculous. Early in 1845 matters had progressed so far that Tryon and Baylor were appointed a committee to go before the Texas Congress and secure a charter for the contemplated school.

Later that year, he served as pastor of the city of Burleson before accepting an appointment from the Baptist State Convention in 1849 to serve as a missionary to Navarro County. In 1851 Byars organized the First Baptist Church of Waco and pastored the church for two years. He then moved to Tarrant County where he was a county missionary. Byars moved to Mississippi in 1868 after accepting the position of State Missionary. Byars returned to Texas in 1871 and served as a missionary to the West Fork Association and the Salado Association.
